Overview
Gaia Resources worked with the team at Rio Tinto to develop environmental data standards for the biological and other surveys that Rio Tinto commission as part of their operations.
Starting from a literature review of the historical work that had been done on one site, this project quickly expanded to cover all of Rio Tinto’s operations. The project also captured and collated a wide range of historical biological data, including spatial data, that was then brought into a centralised store, where it was then able to be made available across the organisation. Along the way, our team helped deliver tools for use in the field, training materials and a range of other related projects.
This project resulted in a set of data standards, tools for evaluating data against these standards, and the establishment of business processes for the ongoing management of environmental data within the organisation.
This work won Rio Tinto a Certificate of Merit in the prestigious Golden Gecko awards (read more about this on our blog) and Andrew presented on it at a WALIS Forum (see his Slideshare presentation here). You can also read more about the work in some of our blog posts, like these:
