On Thursday the 28th I officially presented the 2009 scholarship to Matt Aravidis at the Curtin prize-giving ceremony, held at Curtin University.

I started the Gaia Resources scholarship early on as we established and the ceremony was a reminder of how much benefit it provides not only to the business, but also to the recipients.  The big reminder was realizing all three of the Gaia Resources scholarship recipients were there, receiving awards:

• Matt Aravidis received the 2009 Gaia Resources scholarship (to the best entering student in the GIS degree),
• Ben Zeeb received the Spatial Sciences Institute – Spatial Information Commission Award for Excellence (for being the best first year student in GIS), and
• Charlotte Plug received the Spatial Sciences Excellence Award for the best second year student in the GIS degree.

All four of us are pictured below, with the head of Spatial Sciences, Bert Veenendaal.

It was great to continue our relationship with Curtin University.  From all my dealings with the Spatial Sciences department I really think that the degrees that they offer are very valuable, and provide good practical training for their students (which I hope we supplement!).

It’s great to see three of our staff receive awards – we already knew they are excellent at what they do, and to see them recognized for their success made me feel that the scholarship has certainly been working.
