Gaia Resources was engaged in the first half of 2022 to conduct a multi-criteria analysis in order to create a set of proposed wildlife corridors for the Shire of Mundaring. The corridors connect patches of vegetation – sometimes called ‘stepping stones’ – across the Shire through the spatial analysis of Urban Monitor native vegetation, LiDAR derived stream networks, land use categories and roads. Not specific to a particular species, the aim of the proposed corridors was instead to increase connectivity and overall biodiversity, and to better inform the Shire’s planning processes and engagement of landowners.  Our spatial analyst worked with the Environment and Sustainability Co-ordinator and planners at the Shire to define a set of criteria scoring for the mapping layers and to establish source-destination points. From there, input layers were processed in QGIS software to create a ‘cost’ surface, and a least cost path analysis generated optimal corridors connecting patches of vegetation between the nominated source and destination points.

Carbon Neutral engaged Gaia Resources in March 2022 to assess their GIS environment. The Carbon Neutral team found that the file structure arrangement and data management were issues that were affecting their current spatial operational workflow. At the same time, other core elements were highlighted as potential areas for further development: including the establishment of processes relating to GIS workflows, and an overarching company standard for spatial data.

A consultant from Gaia Resources reviewed the structure of Carbon Neutral’s spatial data and general operational procedures around spatial work. After a few interviews required to recognise the current state of the GIS environment, a series of recommendations were made regarding spatial data management and folder structure, an approach to integrating historic spatial data into this structure and best practices to keep a healthy system.

Gaia Resources was also engaged in the development of map templates for QGIS use and the creation of a QGIS project including a series of datasets relevant for Carbon Neutral’s work process. These datasets were connected as Web Map Services (WMS) and contain topological, water, soil and vegetation data, amongst many others.

In early 2021, the Forest Fire Management group at the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) engaged Gaia Resources to undertake a technical investigation of spatial tools that could help in bushfire risk management in the Hume region of Victoria, Australia. Monitoring forest canopy change through remote sensing was seen as an emerging operational capability that could provide important information and trends to inform the agency about increased risks of catastrophic burns in a changing climate.

Our Data Science team undertook a literature review focused on Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2 and Landsat based applications, along with a review of current field practices. The investigation then worked out two step-by-step processes leveraging a 3 year rolling baseline of satellite imagery processed with Jupyter Notebooks and Google Earth Engine. A final report details these elements and how DEWLP could implement an operational toolset to process new imagery and compare changes in NDVI (Normalised Difference Vegetation Index) above or below the baseline thresholds.

Considered by the client to be a ‘roaring’ success, the report has triggered productive conversations about a statewide monitoring approach, and our team is looking forward to a second stage of implementation work for the Department’s operational use.

Gaia Resources worked closely with the  Northern Australia and Rangelands Fire Information (NAFI) to design and build the app, which you can now download onto your device now from the Apple Store or Google Play Store.

The app reflects the powerful data products available from the NAFI website that are already used extensively across projects and programs in the north of Australia to monitor savanna burning programs and bushfires.  Fire scars are displayed representing remotely sensed burnt areas coloured by the month of the fire, as are thermal hotspots detected from an array of satellites. These data layers are presented in an intuitive mapping interface with a small selection of base maps, location and compass direction functionality.  Hundreds of thousands of hotspots are rendered seamlessly using a heatmap algorithm, and the app works both in real time and has offline capabilities, so that it can work even when you are out in the field.

This app brings the most used fire information resource for land managers in Australia to your phone, allowing you to keep a constant eye on bushfire threats. As a pastoralist, grazier, indigenous ranger, conservation scientist or member of the public, you can view maps of recent fire activity (hotspots) and burnt areas (fire scars) provided by the North Australia and Rangelands Fire Information (NAFI) service.

You can read more about the launch of the app in our blog here.

Gaia Resources undertook a short discovery exercise with the GIS Team Lead at Mineral Resources, to develop a Biodiversity Data Standard.  This consisted of a comprehensive governance document guiding the capture and storage of biodiversity data from both internal and external (consultant) workflows. The Standard includes a template spatial database for contractor data submission, and by virtue of its open-source nature, this spatial database is compatible with many common GIS software packages in use across the sector.

Initially engaged to deliver this Biodiversity Standard, we have been extended to work with them across a range of additional areas, including on-site support work for heritage and environmental data management services, data sourcing, analysis and map production. Our team are also assisting in establishing governance and frameworks around imagery management and spatial strategy.

As a multi-disciplinary resources company, Mineral Resources will benefit in coming years from a more streamlined approach to data collection, management and environmental compliance reporting across its operations. We anticipate the Standard and a single point-of-truth for biodiversity information will translate into operational efficiencies around efficient data discovery, self-service and quality.

In early-mid 2019 Gaia Resources were engaged by the State Records Office of Western Australia to create an index and build a web map of over 2,000 historical sewerage plans for the Perth Metropolitan area.

Due to each map containing large spaces of blank edges the idea was to use multiple spatial processes to compress, clip, and tile thousands of highly detailed maps into one usable product on the web.

Users are now able to interact with these maps here and have the ability to search for an address, zoom/pan into highly detailed levels, and click an area to download the full map (either as a JPEG or GeoTIFF).

You can read more detail about project delivery in the accompanying blog.

In late 2019, Gaia Resources answered a call from the Volunteer Bush Fire Brigades WA, who were seeking a partner to help develop a proof of concept mobile app and web site that would support the volunteers fighting bushfires around WA. Then, in early 2020, funding became available to develop a much more fully-featured product, resulting in the Essential Service Volunteers (ESV) app.

This allows for users to automatically track the duration, location and type of work volunteers undertake, an ID card service to show they’re an approved member of a legitimate volunteer essential service and be provided discounts. It also allowed support for the Brigade Captains and Local Government officers to obtain statistics around the volunteering efforts of their Brigade.

In the midst of this build was the spread of CoVid-19. This new situation, with all of Gaia Resources staff working from home did not impact the delivery and the App was delivered as required.

The mobile app was written for both the Android and iOS operating systems; with infrastructure mounted in Amazon Web Services (AWS). A Django backend was created to house the submitted data and a web frontend to allow senior Brigade staff to add, retrieve and edit data as required. You can read more about our partnership with AWS in this case study.

We had the opportunity in early 2020 to do a deep dive into the GIS system at Garnet Mining Australia (GMA) and help them to set up a best practice spatial environment for their core business workflows. This started with our standard GIS health check followed by the migration of data to a cloud-hosted database. We helped GMA to design file and folder naming conventions, and built up a guideline and set of procedures to help them easily manage their spatial data into the future.

This will create a more seamless experience for their workflows by using QGIS desktop GIS software to discover and load the most up-to-date information. Next up we will provide QGIS refresher training to GMA staff and a comprehensive handover of their new setup. In these difficult times with COVID-19 restrictions affecting businesses everywhere, we are looking at maintaining social distancing with a remote training session and combining classroom style training with our free online video tutorials.

In late 2019, Gaia Resources were engaged by the Yamatji Marlpa Aboriginal Corporation (YMAC) to undertake a small QGIS plug-in development project. QGIS is a Free-and-Open-Source Geographic Information System software used by YMAC and many organisations as a core part of their business operations. It is used to analyse and model spatial information, and to create maps and data products that support decision making processes.

For YMAC the maps produced and analyses are used in native title and heritage protection projects, and leverage a range of corporate data layers sourced from government agencies and internal business units. YMAC have made the decision to move to the latest version of QGIS (LTR 3.10) which includes a significant set of functional improvements, and needed assistance to ensure that key time-saving tools and plug-ins from the older version would be available and functional following the transition.

We worked with Gavin Jackson Cultural Resource Management to review their existing field data collection and reporting approach and develop a new way forward that would be sustainable for the business into the future.

As a small business that specialises in consulting to other organisations, Gavin Jackson CRM has to have a system that supports their workflows, has minimal establishment and ongoing costs, and delivers a high degree of value, so that they can remain competitive and lead the way in their field.

Our approach was to work with the team to understand their business before we then provided a fully costed approach to the development of a new system for their field data collection, data management and reporting.  The system is now being implemented, using open source technologies wherever possible to reduce the ongoing costs for the company.
