In early 2022, Gaia Resources became the data partner for the Australian federal government’s Biodiversity Data Repository project, created to improve the way that biodiversity information is managed.  Gaia Resources has built the technical data delivery ‘pipeline’ whereby information reaches the main data store of the Repository, through a series of quality reviews and transformations to turn relational data into linked data.  This project also has a strong collaboration aspect – and Gaia Resources has provided support to the various data providers – State and Territory government organisations across Australia – so that over 30 million records can flow through the pipeline.  With the pilot project completed, the Biodiversity Data Repository is now operationalised and will see Gaia Resources continue to be the data partner across the 2023-2025 financial years.

Gaia Resources undertook a short discovery exercise with the GIS Team Lead at Mineral Resources, to develop a Biodiversity Data Standard.  This consisted of a comprehensive governance document guiding the capture and storage of biodiversity data from both internal and external (consultant) workflows. The Standard includes a template spatial database for contractor data submission, and by virtue of its open-source nature, this spatial database is compatible with many common GIS software packages in use across the sector.

Initially engaged to deliver this Biodiversity Standard, we have been extended to work with them across a range of additional areas, including on-site support work for heritage and environmental data management services, data sourcing, analysis and map production. Our team are also assisting in establishing governance and frameworks around imagery management and spatial strategy.

As a multi-disciplinary resources company, Mineral Resources will benefit in coming years from a more streamlined approach to data collection, management and environmental compliance reporting across its operations. We anticipate the Standard and a single point-of-truth for biodiversity information will translate into operational efficiencies around efficient data discovery, self-service and quality.

Gaia Resources was engaged in 2019 to develop a submissions portal for biodiversity surveys for the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER).

The new submissions portal complements DWER’s existing online repository of land-based biodiversity surveys in Western Australia, known as the Index of Biodiversity Surveys for Assessments (IBSA).

The objective of IBSA is to capture and consolidate data contained in biodiversity survey reports to support assessments and compliance under the Environmental Protection Act (1986). The survey data and reports are available for everyone to download from the IBSA repository, improving environmental outcomes via improved quality of data for assessment, a broader decision-making base for regulators, an expanded knowledge base of WA’s flora and fauna and improved availability of environmental information for the community.

For the IBSA Submissions portal we developed two web-forms:

  • initial form for proponents to enter metadata and upload reports and spatial files,
  • subsequent form for an approver to digitally sign-off on the metadata and files to complete the submission.

The initial web-form automatically validates files on upload and immediately alerts the proponent when information or files do not meet the IBSA data standards. This makes completing the process very responsive for the proponent and provides greater consistency in the submissions process. It also provides efficiency gains for the DWER officers, significantly reducing the time they need to spend checking IBSA submissions, which results in time savings for the broader environmental assessment process.

We developed the web-forms using the Angular framework with Material Design for user interface elements and Terradata Covalent for web widgets.

IBSA Submissions Architecture Summary

IBSA Submissions Architecture Summary

For the portal back-end we selected Amazon Web Services (AWS) Serverless technology. This is a lightweight, innovative approach that provides a highly responsive system but eliminates the cost of managing servers. A key component of the Serverless approach was ensuring that the new submissions portal is a conduit, temporarily housing the data packages until they are incorporated into DWER’s existing IBSA database.

While the portal workflow is relatively simple at this stage (two forms), it has a flexible design that can be expanded to accommodate more complex workflow steps if required. The project was designed and delivered within a three month period, including significant testing rounds, and is now live at IBSA Submissions.

Gaia Resources started providing GIS mapping support to Hydrologia in March, 2018 and have been working with them on a series of projects since. Hydrologia is a specialist surface water hydrology consultancy with experience in a broad range of services related to understanding and managing complex rainfall and runoff issues.

The spatial analysts at Gaia Resources extend the Hydrologia team, allowing them to focus on their core work and deliver expert advice around surface water and environmental factors, combined with accurate and aesthetically pleasing map figures. Our knowledge of government data availability and suitability allows our team to work in close partnership on business proposals and project delivery.

Initially this involved a review of Environmental Regulations in different States across Australia, followed by system development using existing technologies and resources. The project was aimed at more accurately defining disturbance and rehabilitation for environmental reporting purposes. Our work continues with assistance around leveraging satellite and aerial imagery, and the use of mobile technologies to streamline field data collection.

The Gaia Resources GIS team has been working with the mining company Independence Group NL (IGO) throughout 2017-18 to help transform spatial information management, software and processes that are critical for their exploration activities. Gaia Resources were initially engaged to deliver a GIS Health Check report which assessed the current GIS environment, mapped out a future state with consideration of business requirements and industry best practice, and provided a set of prioritised recommendations and a road map for implementation. A data management project followed where we worked with the GIS team to establish a single point-of-truth spatial database and to assess a number of performance and software issues. PostGIS, FME and QGIS were all key focus areas for storage, distribution and visualisation of company spatial data.

In late 2017, Gaia Resources were approached by an environmental consultancy to investigate the use of free and open-source QGIS and Saga software for processing and analysing data captured by drones for environmental compliance monitoring in the mining industry.

Over the following months, we assisted the client to develop a set of technical processes that could take elevation models derived from drones and assess slope, height, erosional features and other compliance conditions for mine site waste dumps, tailing structures and bunds. The technical processes involved step-by-step documentation to allow the consultancy to effectively create report map output and flag compliance issues. The project also involved a knowledge transfer to the client’s environmental scientists so they could understand how to repeat the process and build their internal capability.

In early 2018, Gaia Resources were asked to provide GIS support and strategic consultancy to Bushfire Prone Planning (BPP). With a growing bushfire planning team in Perth, the BPP team needed to expand its use of GIS software beyond the 1-2 analysts based in remote offices. We provided initial advice to help them understand the benefits and limitations of using the free and open source GIS package QGIS across their business.

We first helped BPP to establish their core templates in QGIS so they could produce the same informative and professional products they had been creating in another GIS package, and then provided entry level training for their planners. Our support block model was then taken up to help provide a series of recommendations for best practice data management and governance approach (e.g. standards and procedures). Bushfire Prone Mapping are now actively using QGIS for their report maps and analyses, and implementing some of the technical recommendations.  We are looking forward to continuing to help BPP achieve their objectives in moving towards free and open-source technology.

In early 2018, Gaia Resources were engaged by the Environmental Coordinator at Independence Group (IGO) to define ground disturbance across its Jaguar copper project exploration tenements. This spatial analysis involved our defined disturbance mapping workflow to assess recent aerial imagery for recent and historical drilling tracks, pads, access roads and facilities.

The large area of assessment and historical exploration activities necessitated a semi-automated approach, while accurate area calculations were needed to determine statistics for annual reporting against environmental approvals and the company’s obligations under the Mine Rehabilitation Fund (MRF).

Once the initial delineation of clearing was complete, Gaia Resources worked closely with the Environment team in a final review stage to ensure that the areas were correctly classified against MRF categories, and tabulated by tenement and by category in the required reporting format.

Since its acquisition of the Jaguar project from IGO, Copperchem have also engaged Gaia Resources to continue with ad-hoc support for disturbance mapping.
