Gaia Resources supported the Queensland State Archives as they prepared for the Frontier Wars documentary and exhibit, by using our Clio Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool to transcribe handwritten letters.  Clio is a web based system built around the Amazon Web Services Textract product, and it enables uploading, reviewing and correcting of scanned forms like field data sheets through the web interface.

Through this proof of concept project, a range of handwritten documents were run through Clio and through a range of checks and balances, the results of the AI transcription far exceeded the expectations that were set by QSA, with around 80% of the transcriptions being above average or better.

The resultant transcriptions were then passed on to the Queensland State Archives team, where they were able to integrate the results into their existing crowd-sourcing program to further check and review the results.  This reduced the time it took to transcribe the archives, and made it possible to include more materials in the launch of the Frontier Wars material.

Gaia Resources undertook a proof-of-concept project with the Department of Environment, Parks and Water Security to transcribe a number of scanned hardcopy field data sheets using our Clio Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool.  Clio is a web based system built around the Amazon Web Services Textract product, and it enables uploading, reviewing and correcting of scanned forms like field data sheets through the web interface.

A number of these scanned forms were run through Clio in two runs – the first run saw the system return a lower accuracy of 73%, but after working through the forms and tuning the models in the AI system, we were able to get it to between 93% and 99% in the second run.

This approach of using a targeted and specific AI tool helped the Department of Environment, Parks and Water Security to capture information from field sheets in a much faster, less error-prone method than the current manual system that they previously employed.

In early 2022, Gaia Resources became the data partner for the Australian federal government’s Biodiversity Data Repository project, created to improve the way that biodiversity information is managed.  Gaia Resources has built the technical data delivery ‘pipeline’ whereby information reaches the main data store of the Repository, through a series of quality reviews and transformations to turn relational data into linked data.  This project also has a strong collaboration aspect – and Gaia Resources has provided support to the various data providers – State and Territory government organisations across Australia – so that over 30 million records can flow through the pipeline.  With the pilot project completed, the Biodiversity Data Repository is now operationalised and will see Gaia Resources continue to be the data partner across the 2023-2025 financial years.

In early 2021, the Forest Fire Management group at the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) engaged Gaia Resources to undertake a technical investigation of spatial tools that could help in bushfire risk management in the Hume region of Victoria, Australia. Monitoring forest canopy change through remote sensing was seen as an emerging operational capability that could provide important information and trends to inform the agency about increased risks of catastrophic burns in a changing climate.

Our Data Science team undertook a literature review focused on Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2 and Landsat based applications, along with a review of current field practices. The investigation then worked out two step-by-step processes leveraging a 3 year rolling baseline of satellite imagery processed with Jupyter Notebooks and Google Earth Engine. A final report details these elements and how DEWLP could implement an operational toolset to process new imagery and compare changes in NDVI (Normalised Difference Vegetation Index) above or below the baseline thresholds.

Considered by the client to be a ‘roaring’ success, the report has triggered productive conversations about a statewide monitoring approach, and our team is looking forward to a second stage of implementation work for the Department’s operational use.

Gaia Resources undertook a short discovery exercise with the GIS Team Lead at Mineral Resources, to develop a Biodiversity Data Standard.  This consisted of a comprehensive governance document guiding the capture and storage of biodiversity data from both internal and external (consultant) workflows. The Standard includes a template spatial database for contractor data submission, and by virtue of its open-source nature, this spatial database is compatible with many common GIS software packages in use across the sector.

Initially engaged to deliver this Biodiversity Standard, we have been extended to work with them across a range of additional areas, including on-site support work for heritage and environmental data management services, data sourcing, analysis and map production. Our team are also assisting in establishing governance and frameworks around imagery management and spatial strategy.

As a multi-disciplinary resources company, Mineral Resources will benefit in coming years from a more streamlined approach to data collection, management and environmental compliance reporting across its operations. We anticipate the Standard and a single point-of-truth for biodiversity information will translate into operational efficiencies around efficient data discovery, self-service and quality.

Gaia Resources were invited to the final round of tendering for a project in 2018 to create a commercial and recreational fishing app for the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries Queensland.

The invitation Hackathon involved a 5-day intensive challenge to develop apps to demonstrate innovative solutions to some key challenges:

  • one recreational app to provide information about geofenced regions of Queensland and show allowed and prohibited activities in a region and log your catch,
  • a second app to assist the automated submission of logbook data for Commercial fisheries.

Although the proof-of-concepts apps were developed in only 5 days and were not production-ready, the process led to a detailed understanding of the Commercial and eLogBook submission process, and in the 5 days, we were able to produce two lightweight iOS apps to demonstrate the required functionality.

Key Outcomes

  • Two lightweight demonstration iOS apps in the 5-day hackathon
  • Enhanced understanding of the eLogBook submission process in Queensland Fisheries
  • New innovative region geofencing and species logging functionality
