Gaia Resources was engaged in 2023 by the Northern Territory’s Department of the Environment Parks and Water Security to evaluate their flora systems.

This involved reviewing three systems – the specimen management system HOLTZE, the Vegetation Site Database and the Flora NT external website – to develop an understanding of the current state.  Through workshops and interviews a baseline of the system capacity was established, as well as the strategic imperatives for the future of the systems.  This project also included considerable review of data types and data standards within these systems.

Once this was determined, an evaluation of the options for moving these systems forward was developed, that was undertaken against a robust evaluation framework, developed from the baseline.

Through an interactive process, the roadmap was then developed in conjunction with the key NT government decision making staff, so that a clear path towards the future state could be developed collaboratively.

Following on from the design of the Biodiversity Information Office (BIO), we were engaged to develop the Biodiversity Information Office systems.  This work commenced in 2021 and the launch was undertaken in June 2022.

The systems that were developed as part of this work includes:

  • Data Submission – a means to deliver data into the BIO systems, which includes a data submission form that enables data providers to map their data to data standards,
  • Data Curation and Storage – the main engine of the BIO systems, this is where data is received, stored and actively curated by the BIO team members,
  • Data Delivery – delivering the key system for the interface with the BIO data, which was designed with Liquid Interactive, and
  • Taxonomic Names Management – a separate system (Nomos) was developed to assist the WA taxonomic names regulators in managing taxonomic names.

This project implemented the designs and plans that were created in the previous project, and has delivered an innovative and robust biodiversity repository for Western Australia.

In early 2022, Gaia Resources became the data partner for the Australian federal government’s Biodiversity Data Repository project, created to improve the way that biodiversity information is managed.  Gaia Resources has built the technical data delivery ‘pipeline’ whereby information reaches the main data store of the Repository, through a series of quality reviews and transformations to turn relational data into linked data.  This project also has a strong collaboration aspect – and Gaia Resources has provided support to the various data providers – State and Territory government organisations across Australia – so that over 30 million records can flow through the pipeline.  With the pilot project completed, the Biodiversity Data Repository is now operationalised and will see Gaia Resources continue to be the data partner across the 2023-2025 financial years.

Carbon Neutral engaged Gaia Resources in March 2022 to assess their GIS environment. The Carbon Neutral team found that the file structure arrangement and data management were issues that were affecting their current spatial operational workflow. At the same time, other core elements were highlighted as potential areas for further development: including the establishment of processes relating to GIS workflows, and an overarching company standard for spatial data.

A consultant from Gaia Resources reviewed the structure of Carbon Neutral’s spatial data and general operational procedures around spatial work. After a few interviews required to recognise the current state of the GIS environment, a series of recommendations were made regarding spatial data management and folder structure, an approach to integrating historic spatial data into this structure and best practices to keep a healthy system.

Gaia Resources was also engaged in the development of map templates for QGIS use and the creation of a QGIS project including a series of datasets relevant for Carbon Neutral’s work process. These datasets were connected as Web Map Services (WMS) and contain topological, water, soil and vegetation data, amongst many others.

In 2021, we were engaged to undertake a significant amount of business analysis over a short period to assist the BIO team in developing a roadmap for the future of the systems development for BIO. To undertake this, our team developed four separate documents:

  • A Gap Analysis Report – reviewing the work done to date, and documenting the current state of BIO,
  • An Information Architecture Report – determining the future state for the data workflows and management for BIO,
  • A Technical Architecture Report – determining the future state of the technology that could be utilised to deliver the systems for BIO, and
  • A Work Packages Report – creating a roadmap for the BIO team to use to move from the current to the future state, and to determine how best to deliver these components.

This project delivered a number of additional benefits for the BIO team, including providing support for the existing staff, advice on a range of topics and was delivered on time and budget.

We worked with Gavin Jackson Cultural Resource Management to review their existing field data collection and reporting approach and develop a new way forward that would be sustainable for the business into the future.

As a small business that specialises in consulting to other organisations, Gavin Jackson CRM has to have a system that supports their workflows, has minimal establishment and ongoing costs, and delivers a high degree of value, so that they can remain competitive and lead the way in their field.

Our approach was to work with the team to understand their business before we then provided a fully costed approach to the development of a new system for their field data collection, data management and reporting.  The system is now being implemented, using open source technologies wherever possible to reduce the ongoing costs for the company.

We were asked by the team from the Office of the Auditor General (Western Australia) to help them develop a roadmap for their archival management in the face of considerable change – namely the refreshing of a range of their document management systems (a mix of different platforms, which represented a challenge in itself).  As part of this work, we ran a small initial workshop with the core team at the Office, which helped us to develop an understanding of the challenges that they were facing.

A final “roadmap” report was provided to help the Office to work through these challenges, and to give them additional guidance to work through the challenges that they were facing – while capitalising on the opportunities that this also presented.

In mid 2018, Gaia Resources were engaged to develop a desktop app for Wildlife Drones to act as a field mapping application for the real-time display of (radio frequency) tagged animal locations monitored by a drone. The project involved an initial discovery phase and technology review to understand what software platforms would be ideal to meet the requirements of the solution. The deliverable for the development phase is an app with imagery and mapping layers that is available for offline and online use, including the ability to synchronise collected data to a central database when back within mobile data range.

Two subsequent phases of work from late 2018 – 2019 have focused on improvements in real-time data display of the drone position and radio tags, offline base-map useability and back-end data processing.

Wildlife Drones have presented their integrated solution to conferences around Australia, and have a growing client base where our desktop app is a critical solution component contributing to important wildlife conservation efforts and research.

More information about this project and about our client Wildlife Drones can be found on our blogs.

The State NRM Office within the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development engaged Gaia Resources in early 2018 to build an interactive grant application web map for their Community Stewardship Natural Resource Management grant round. The workflow driven application is mobile responsive (e.g.suitable for iOS and Android tablets) and steps grant applicants through a process of specifying on-ground activities they propose to undertake and to nominate the spatial location of that proposed work. The process is loosely coupled with another grant management software, and is tightly integrated with the State NRM instance of our online web mapping GRID interface.
