Gaia Resources provided in-house training for the Environment team at Horizon Power in two separate sessions in June and November of 2018.

The team at Horizon Power were already using the free and open-source software, but needed formal training to unlock its potential to support their environmental processes such as site assessments, heritage surveys and vegetation clearing applications. A total of six staff are now trained and using QGIS software on a regular basis, having started with our free online video tutorials backed up by two hands-on training with our staff.

In late 2017, Gaia Resources were approached by an environmental consultancy to investigate the use of free and open-source QGIS and Saga software for processing and analysing data captured by drones for environmental compliance monitoring in the mining industry.

Over the following months, we assisted the client to develop a set of technical processes that could take elevation models derived from drones and assess slope, height, erosional features and other compliance conditions for mine site waste dumps, tailing structures and bunds. The technical processes involved step-by-step documentation to allow the consultancy to effectively create report map output and flag compliance issues. The project also involved a knowledge transfer to the client’s environmental scientists so they could understand how to repeat the process and build their internal capability.

In May of 2017, Gaia Resources were engaged by the Wagin-Woodanilling Landcare Group in a small project to add interactive maps to their WordPress website. This involved adding an open-source Leaflet plugin for WordPress, configuration of web map services (or spatial data layers) onto five separate web map pages on their site, and handover training to staff.

The Proposed Fence on My Property web map page is an example of one of these interactive maps. It provides a workflow for landowners to lodge an expression of interest by marking their fence on a map and filling out form details. This submission starts a conversation with the Landcare Group where they can obtain land management and conservation advice, and look at options for other means of support.

Most of the web map services are maintained through the South West Catchment Council’s GRID application (Geographic & Reporting Information Database), and Wagin-Woodanilling are one of many landcare and community groups that use GRID to support their Natural Resource Management activities.

We have delivered an implementation of the GRID product to the Rangelands NRM group, after previously developing and implementing it for the South West Catchment Council.

The project involved discussing the work that is being done in the field by the Rangelands team, and then developing up Activities within the GRID implementation that met these requirements.  GRID’s flexible schema allowed for Activities to be set up to record a wide range of information that the Rangelands team plan, capture and report on in the field.

Additionally, a range of base layers were identified as being required for the Rangelands team, including access to imagery across their operating area; covering 85% of the State of Western Australia.  These datasets were sourced, processed and loaded into the GRID system.

Finally, we have trained the Rangelands team in how to use the GRID system through a workshop environment, and continue to support the team through an ongoign support contract, where we also assist them with their spatial data needs.

  • Custom map production,
  • Analysis of various datasets for project-based evaluations,
  • Assistance in annual reporting preparation,
  • Delivering training to the staff within the organisation, as well as their Landcare groups,
  • Remote sensing support (including drones), and
  • Roadmap and technology support.

We continue to support the SWCC, and others in the NRM community, through our various support approaches which include time and materials, pre-purchased block support and comprehensive service level agreements.

Gaia Resources have worked with the Australian Biological Resources Study (ABRS) on their Bush Blitz program for some time, assisting with a range of different sub-projects.

Our initial project work with Bush Blitz was around helping them to manage the data from their expeditions.  In these early stages, we helped run mobile field data capture checks, with our team attending the Bush Blitz at Ned’s Corner back in 2011.  We assisted with a range of different aspects of their field data capture, and ran a series of tests with different mobile tools.  We also set up their Bush Blitz web site back in this timeframe, and have been providing ongoing hosting and support for the project since.

In 2015, we embarked on a new phase of Bush Blitz support with the ABRS, starting with a workshop to capture the requirements for a new web site that could be more self-sufficient for the team.  This workshop delivered a rollout plan with a phased approach to revisiting the web site and data capture for the Bush Blitz project, and in 2016 we commenced the implementation by running training for the ABRS team in the new web infrastructure.

Further projects are in the rollout plan and will include more data management projects to ensure that the data from Bush Blitz surveys continues to be collected and stored in a sustainable manner.
