We recently built a new on-line spatial system for the Land for Wildlife program. Land for Wildlife (LFW) helps private landholders maintain habitat for wildlife on their properties, creating a network of native vegetation across Western Australia where wildlife can flourish.

The program is managed by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) and is delivered in partnership with seven regional Natural Resource Management (NRM) groups. The program currently has almost 2000 properties across Western Australia.

We developed a web-based spatial system to manage information about the existing LFW properties and new applicants to the program. The system allows DBCA and regional NRM officers to view and edit the data in an integrated system, with all officers able to see updates in real-time. This makes collaboration much easier, both within each group and across all eight organisations. It also saves officer time (previously information was stored across multiple formats and systems) allowing officers to focus on the landholders and wildlife conservation.

The system is based on GRID, which was originally developed for South West Catchments Council and is currently in use in seven NRM groups, and two other whole-of-state programs (State NRM and the Dieback Information Delivery and Management System).

For LFW we worked closely with DBCA, Peel-Harvey Catchment Council (PHCC) and the other regional NRM groups to tailor this version of GRID to suit the workflow and partnership-based delivery of the LFW program. This work was completed as part of a State NRM Program funded project, managed by the PHCC and DBCA.

The State NRM Office within the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development engaged Gaia Resources in early 2018 to build an interactive grant application web map for their Community Stewardship Natural Resource Management grant round. The workflow driven application is mobile responsive (e.g.suitable for iOS and Android tablets) and steps grant applicants through a process of specifying on-ground activities they propose to undertake and to nominate the spatial location of that proposed work. The process is loosely coupled with another grant management software, and is tightly integrated with the State NRM instance of our online web mapping GRID interface.

In 2018, the Blackwood Basin Group (BBG) engaged Gaia Resources on a small project to enhance its website with the inclusion of an interactive map feature where landowners could submit project proposals for fences, planting or flora and fauna sightings. The Blackwood Basin Group is a non-profit, community-based organisation that coordinates environmental management within the Blackwood River Catchment in Western Australia. The site that we added includes a Leaflet plugin and map window where registered users can lodge a boundary for proposed work and fill out a series of questions to submit their concept for consideration and support resources.

Their website states: “Would you like to submit a project for on-ground funding or submit a sighting of a feral animal or weed species? Use our interactive mapping tool to map out proposed fence lines, plan revegetation projects or to report sightings of wildlife, native flora and weeds.  You can even add photos, property maps  and additional information.”

The interactive map displays other layers hosted on the South West Catchment Council‘s GRID application, and this is a small but important piece of the work we do to empower the natural resource management sector.

In 2017 the State NRM Office wanted to take a closer look at their historical grant projects and understand where government investment had occurred in previous years.

To enable this study, Gaia Resources converted a standalone database of hundreds of individual projects into a GIS layer and published it to the State NRM GRID application so that information about natural resource management project activities (e.g. fencing, coastal rehabilitation, weed management, planting, community workshops) and investment dollars could be compared over time and across other layers like local government areas and regions. The spatial team at Gaia Resources also compiled data from associated spreadsheets, reports and internet research to add value to the grant projects layer, so that staff could use it as a primary reference point for project descriptions and contact points.

In a subsequent engagement in 2018, Community Stewardship grant boundaries were added.

The resulting data helps to inform future grant investment strategy, and has saved staff many hours of effort otherwise spent in locating historical project folders and information across multiple locations. The team at the State NRM office now have that information at their fingertips and, through the GIS tools in their GRID application, have the capability to generate statistics and reports on the fly.

We worked with the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council (EMRC) to implement an instance of our GRID web mapping solution to support their programs and community groups.   This was a ‘standard’ GRID rollout project – we helped set up their data templates (Activities, based on those from other groups), their contextual data (base layers), and then ran hands-on training for EMRC staff and a range of their group members.

The EMRC Administrator is now a part of the GRID Champions community and receives training and support, including regular updates on data availability and system enhancements.

This project was made possible through funding from the Western Australian State NRM organisation, through their Community Capacity Building Grants.

In May of 2017, Gaia Resources were engaged by the Wagin-Woodanilling Landcare Group in a small project to add interactive maps to their WordPress website. This involved adding an open-source Leaflet plugin for WordPress, configuration of web map services (or spatial data layers) onto five separate web map pages on their site, and handover training to staff.

The Proposed Fence on My Property web map page is an example of one of these interactive maps. It provides a workflow for landowners to lodge an expression of interest by marking their fence on a map and filling out form details. This submission starts a conversation with the Landcare Group where they can obtain land management and conservation advice, and look at options for other means of support.

Most of the web map services are maintained through the South West Catchment Council’s GRID application (Geographic & Reporting Information Database), and Wagin-Woodanilling are one of many landcare and community groups that use GRID to support their Natural Resource Management activities.

In early 2017, we worked with the State NRM Program to implement GRID within their organisation.  This setup was undertaken as part of the recent Capacity Building Grants and aims to not only assist groups in being able to more easily submit their grant applications, but also to provide a means for groups to gain access to this easy to use, online GIS for the NRM community.

After some initial consultation, the setup for the State NRM GRID instance was completed, and training rolled out in March 2017.  As part of this ongoing support will be provided to further streamline the instance of GRID to suit the needs of the State NRM Program.

We have delivered an implementation of the GRID product to the Rangelands NRM group, after previously developing and implementing it for the South West Catchment Council.

The project involved discussing the work that is being done in the field by the Rangelands team, and then developing up Activities within the GRID implementation that met these requirements.  GRID’s flexible schema allowed for Activities to be set up to record a wide range of information that the Rangelands team plan, capture and report on in the field.

Additionally, a range of base layers were identified as being required for the Rangelands team, including access to imagery across their operating area; covering 85% of the State of Western Australia.  These datasets were sourced, processed and loaded into the GRID system.

Finally, we have trained the Rangelands team in how to use the GRID system through a workshop environment, and continue to support the team through an ongoign support contract, where we also assist them with their spatial data needs.
