We are deep in the process of recruitment again, and thought we’d take a moment to talk about what we’re looking for.

At the moment we’re recruiting for:

  • Project Managers – to add to our team in the Project Management area, as we’re about to start some big new projects in the new financial year – we’ve been looking through our recruiters, but stay tuned for an ad coming soon too,
  • Software Engineers – we have already advertised and are in the interview stage for our Senior Developer role, but we are also about to start looking for more Software Engineers to join our team for the large projects mentioned above,
  • Business Analysts – we are still receiving applications from our recent Business Analyst job advertisement, to again bring on some more people to help with projects, and
  • DevOps – we are about to also start recruiting for new DevOps team members, to help with the every-growing work managing our cloud infrastructure implementations.  Another job ad will be out soon for this as well.

If any of these interest you then either hit up the linked job ad above, or drop us a line at jobs@gaiaresources.com.au and send us a CV and some information on what you’re interested in, and why.

While we have been busy reaching out to our networks and to our recruiters to find good candidates for these positions, as well as the adverts already out or coming out shortly, we thought we might also talk a bit about what a job here looks like, too – the things you can’t quite put in the job ad.

  • People first – one of our core values is about supporting our people, and making sure that we think of the person as well as the role that you play.  We have a whole raft of ways that we support our teams, including our Cultural Champions and a range of training and support around “soft skills” (like we mentioned back in May, last year, and again just recently).
  • Flexibility – we pride ourselves on our flexibility around working arrangements, and most of our team work from home for part of the week at least – some people prefer entirely remote roles, and others prefer to come into an office space, but the choice is yours.  We also get you the things you need to make work happen – our “I Need Stuff” email address has had some hilarious requests over the years 😀
  • Autonomy with accountability – we allow people to manage their own time to achieve the outcomes that are necessary for their work. To that end you will also have Work Leads to help support you and to help you find that balance, and a team of people that look at workloads and solve any challenges there each week.
  • Get good – our functional guilds are full of like minded people who work in the same disciplines, and our Functional leads are the ones that help you to get better at what it is that you do – along with all the other members of your cohort.  From coworking time to knowledge sharing to just plain ol’ lunch together – there are plenty of ways to build your skillsets.

We take our work seriously but we don’t take ourselves too seriously – after all life needs to have some balance and we need to find ways that we can all work together and have a bit of fun along the way.  So from things like the more formal “welcome lunches” we are having in the next few weeks, to the much less formal Friday drinks, gaming sessions, jam sessions and other shenanigans all add some colour and personality to the place – and makes a nice break from our remote lives these days.

As we mentioned, we’re looking for people that want to join our team and so if any of the positions above specifically interest you, or you would like to chuck your hat in the ring, then feel free to email us at jobs@gaiaresources.com.au and tell us about yourself!

It seems that we are posting job adverts often these days – indeed, Gaia Resources has been growing steadily over the past few years through the many challenges of global pandemics, market uncertainty, and all sorts of other concerns.

Right now, we’re looking at another round of recruitment to bolster our team as we head into the busy delivery period at the end of the financial year, and into the new projects that are slated to commence into the new financial year.

Specifically, we’re looking for people in three particular types of positions:

  • Project Manager – we’re finding that as we’ve grown, we need to get more people on board who can manage the projects that we’re winning and delivering.  Ideally, we’re looking for people who have delivered software projects, and want to work with us in our core areas; environmental technology, archives and collections, and the like,
  • Devops Engineer – we have been discussing this title for a while, but what we’re after is a can-do person who understands how to help us deliver our projects using cloud infrastructure, primarily around the Amazon Web Services stack (although we’re working towards being more agnostic in our cloud infrastructure delivery), and
  • Support Coordinator – once we deliver all these projects, we move into support mode and deliver a range of support services to our clients.  This means that as we deliver more projects, we end up with more support projects as well, and we need another client-focused person to help deliver on those, this role with a particular interest in archival projects.

Like many other businesses, the COVID-19 pandemic has meant that we have moved towards a lot of remote working or working from home while our team remains safe and sound.  That has been a really interesting outcome for us as it means that the majority of the roles we advertise these days can be delivered from anywhere in a relevant time zone – although we are an Australian company, so we do invest in Australian capacity rather than outsource to other countries.  It’s important to us and to our clients that we develop capacity in our home country and make sure we deliver well.

Of course there are always exceptions – the Support Coordinator role listed above is one that we want to recruit for the Brisbane office so that we can also locally support one of our major clients, the Queensland State Archives (QSA).  We are working with QSA on a brand new project to deliver a Digital Preservation System and we would welcome people with skills in that area that are local to Brisbane to join our team.

If you want to know a bit more about how we work, then have a look at some of the blogs from our team (with some more to come on our culture and training we’ve been doing lately):

All of our ads these days are now being advertised solely via LinkedIn Jobs, or we contract and hire through Rayne Recruitment (we’ve worked with Erran for close to our entire existence at Gaia Resources).  You can find those jobs here:

If you’re interested in working with us, then take a look at the job ads and apply – or if you have skills that you think we need around technology, the environment or archives and collections, then get in touch with us at any time via jobs@gaiaresources.com.au – maybe you’re the person we didn’t know we need until we meet you!

We’re looking forward to hearing from you in the future!

What an exciting two years it has been at Gaia – while the world around us has come to a halt, we’ve been fortunate enough to have the right skillsets in place to continue to grow. And you know what that means – the chance to find new hires to join the Gaia mob.

So far this year we have welcomed six newcomers, and will continue the search for more to jump on the exciting projects we have on the horizon.

Brad Power Senior Software Engineer

Hi, my name’s Brad Power – I’m a software engineer and researcher from Perth.

I’ve worked across a number of different industries including embedded/mobile, video game development, scientific data visualisation, and academic research. I’m interested in technology in general but am also fascinated by maths, music, and history – really I think I’m just a sucker for a good story and learning new things!

Having spent a fair chunk of time in academia I’m also passionate about getting people involved in knowledge sharing, and contributing information back into the community.

Casey Murrihy Support Coordinator

Hello, I’m Casey, Gaia’s newest Support Coordinator. I followed Jordan into the Gaia office one day and they decided to keep me.

I’m very excited to work for Gaia as it was my childhood ambition to help preserve the environment for future generations. I studied environmental Science; however, I discovered I was much better at turning computers off and on again and found myself working in IT Support when I got older, rather than saving the world. Gaia Resources doesn’t just talk the talk; they try very hard to walk the walk too. The sincerity and the integrity of the company and all the fabulous people who work for it is an inspiration, and I am honoured to be a part of it (although walking is hard so I’ll just drive my EV).

In my downtime, I like to pretend I can bake and enjoy creating dietary-specific spins on classic baking favourites (some more successful than others). I am thrilled to have a new batch of victims… I mean subjects… no wait,  colleagues to feed. I accept requests, so let me know if you come up with a combination!

Hayden Richards – Software EngineerHaydenRichardsProfilePic

Hello! I’m Hayden. I recently started at Gaia as a Software Engineer.

I was born in Perth, the best city in the world, and I’ve lived here my whole life. I have a Bachelor of Actuarial & Applied Statistics, so my background is actually in mathematics, statistics and data analysis. I’ve had a passion for programming since I was young, and through my previous technical roles, personal projects and active interest in the open-source community I’ve become a software engineer. I love Python. I spend a lot of my free time working on personal projects and contributing to open-source projects online. In my spare time I’m also expanding my horizons by learning Rust and Ruby.

My other loves are cricket and football. I’m actually a St Kilda Saints fanatic. You don’t have to remind me they’re bad, or ask me why I support them – I’ve already suffered enough.

I have two best friends, Frank (the dachshund) and Marley (the golden retriever). It’s always funny to see heads turn at the park – no one can believe the fat little sausage dog can keep up.

I joined Gaia Resources for many reasons. First and foremost are the company’s values and ethics. I think it’s rare in today’s world to find somewhere that so strongly cares about our future. Another reason is the culture – even early on it’s clear how much Gaia cares about its employees – we have so many opportunities to develop ourselves. Finally, Gaia has allowed me to take an important step in my career by becoming a recognized software engineer. This is something of a dream come true for me.

I’ve been at Gaia for almost one month and I couldn’t be happier. I’ve been particularly impressed by how welcoming the whole team has been, the workplace culture and the work-life balance. I’m very proud to be at Gaia, and can’t wait to see where my journey here takes me.

Khaled Faour – Project Manager

Around 25 years ago, I came to the land of Oz straight from what was left of Beirut.

In my previous life I was an agricultural research economist and bioeconomic modeller and worked at the American University of Beirut, where I completed my Masters in AgEc, then at NSW Agriculture at the Wagga Wagga and Yanco research centres where I got to travel around most of NSW and VIC, and even parts of WA.

I moved to Brisbane around 20 years ago and completed a Bachelors of Commerce. Then around 15 years ago I found myself jumping in the world of project management, mostly with QLD Health.

I enjoy music of all sorts, languages and places, including anything made my by DJ Khaled of course – no bias at all. I also love ‘tasteful’ action and comedy movies.

I’m definitely enjoying my new Gaia family, and loving and living the dream!

Natasha Madondo Junior Software Engineer

Hello there, I’m Natasha! I’m currently interning as a Junior Software Engineer at Gaia. I have a Bachelor’s degree with honours in Environmental Management, a diploma in Japanese and I am about to finish my studies as a Software Engineer.

I’m from Zimbabwe but I’ve lived in the UK, Australia and Japan. I’m really interested in travelling, architecture, the environment and languages . I currently speak four languages and aim to get to seven one day!  I’ve travelled to about 12 counties and counting, my favourites being Belgium, Malaysia, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea.

My hobbies include reading, changing my hair every 2 seconds,  hectic rounds of karaoke, and trying to find the platypi that live in the river near us and cooking. I love sweets but can’t bake to save my life so baked goods are always welcome.

Prior to Gaia I worked in Japan as a translator and administrative assistant to improve my Japanese. During my time there I also learnt that as much as I hate snow, skiing is acceptable. I also gained my interest in programming and IT by talking to co-workers and gaining some insight. I love a challenge and just like my 7 languages goal I hope to become a better software engineer and create solutions for a more sustainable world.

I’m very happy to be at Gaia as the values here closely align with my own. Being able to work for a company that values their employees and considers their impact on the environment by making a conscious choice to do better makes me extremely proud to be here.

ガイアの皆様、これからどうぞよろしくお願い致します。(translation)

Natalie van der WaltSoftware Tester

Natalie is camera shy and doesn’t like to talk about herself, so until we do some further sleuthing, and potentially even get our hands on an actual photo, here’s some text from her LinkedIn profile:

“I am a curious and pragmatic Software Testing and IT professional who is extremely customer focussed. The last 12 years in IT included roles as an Agile Test Analyst, Test Manager, Senior Business Analyst and Senior QA in various domains including Health, Travel, Real Estate, Retail, Finance and the Automotive Industry.”

We’re very excited to have Natalie on board to bring her vast experience and skills to our ever-growing need for software testing and automation, and to aid us in implementing new internal software going forward. We’ll be sure to give Natalie the introduction she deserves next time!

If you would like to work with us or want to talk to one of our staff about their experience, please get in touch! Reach out via email at info@gaiaresouces.com.au or connect with us on Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn

This year promises to be an exciting one for Gaia Resources. We have many large projects underway and subsequently are focusing on sustainably growing our team. Within the past month, two new team members have started in our Brisbane office, while more recruits will start, company-wide, in the coming weeks.

As the company grows, it gives me pause to reflect on my start just a year and a half ago. It was around the beginning of the pandemic. Gaia Resources was operating fully remote, and onboarding was a week of video meetings introducing me to the staff and the Gaia way. Tania Ryan detailed the experience in her blog ‘Starting a new job during a Pandemic’. She highlighted the lengths the company went to provide a welcoming albeit virtual environment.

Since then, we have embraced a flexible work environment where we balance work from home and office days (detailed in Mieke’s blog ‘Remote Flexible Work Pitfalls for Parents’). Onboarding directly reflects this with a mix of in-person and video meetings, allowing recruits to meet our whole team, now spread across five states/territories, as well as get in-person support. Flexible work arrangements are valued by all staff at Gaia Resources. However, there is nothing like tapping a coworker on the shoulder to ask a simple question when you’re new.

Regardless of how we introduce new staff to our team, we always emphasise our company culture and espouse the values that we highlighted in our recent strategy week: Do the right thing, Be open, Be involved, Do what you said you would do, and Be there for each other. (See https://archive.gaiaresources.com.au/gaia-resources-annual-stratgey-week/). We are a company that doesn’t just pay lip service to what we think are good values. Instead, we put a large amount of effort into making them a reality. As such, Gaia Resources truly invests in their people and builds a culture of which we are all proud. And I think this is one reason why we continue to attract great talent.

I wrote the above words before reaching out to our new team members to see why they chose to work at Gaia Resources, but it sounds like all of the above rings true.

Meet Gordon Campbell and Sally Mitchell!

Hello, my name is Gordon Campbell a.k.a Minty Jones.

I hail from the shores of South West Scotland but have resided in Australia for 20 years. My love of programming started at nine years old and I started freelancing around 2001. Since then, I have earned qualifications in Graphic Design, Interactive Multimedia, and most recently, IT (Software Programming).

Aside from this, I have two children, am a keen musician, and have been a signwriter on the side for the last six years. Within Gaia Resources, I fill a Junior Software Engineer role working primarily within the behemoth that is known as ArchivesSpace. Having a family, especially a recent newborn, work/life balance is very important to me and Gaia offers a great degree of flexibility within their structure.

I decided to take this opportunity with Gaia as I believe that they provide a service that is concerned about the future of the planet, and I find this extremely refreshing. I’m proud that I can work with like-minded people trying to make this world a better place.

Hi, I’m Sally. I have been brought onboard to Gaia Resources as a Support Coordinator.

The thing that first interested me in Gaia Resources was the values and ethics. Gaia Resources works with companies to develop technological solutions to make the world a better place. This includes choosing projects and clients whose own work and values contribute positively to the world. It was this strong principle that made me look further into Gaia Resources.

Gaia Resources believes strongly in its culture and its employees and places a higher value on the relationships with their people than the money they bring into the company. It’s been such a welcoming and inclusive environment. I am only in my first month, but so far this is shaping up to be the best company that I have worked for.

If you want to work with us or talk to a staff member about their experience, please get in touch! Reach out via email at info@gaiaresouces.com.au or connect with us on Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn

As part of our sustainable growth plans, and as a direct result of a few projects – with announcements on those to come – we are looking to hire a number of new people, across a range of roles.

We are a technology consulting company, and we achieve our mission to make the world a better place by delivering sustainable solutions to help our clients deliver on their core business. We deliver these solutions in areas such as environmental technology, collections management, archives, health, and other areas.

We are currently looking for:

  • Project Managers, to help us to deliver our projects,
  • Business Analysts, to help us in areas ranging from gathering and managing user requirements to undertaking more detailed analysis of systems and data models, and
  • Software Engineers, to help us develop the systems for these projects.

There’s three very different roles in here, so what are we looking for in these candidates?

Project Managers

You will deliver large, multi-year projects, and preferably have some experience in the areas our clients work in – particularly the Environmental area, but also in Collections, Health and other technology projects.  It’s ideal that you would have an understanding of how to manage software engineering and data science based projects, as this is highly relevant to the work that we do.

Business Analysts

As a Business Analyst with us, you may work across a range of areas, including gathering and documenting requirements, developing acceptance criteria, managing requirements, and also a range of other activities, including training, scrum mastery and testing roles.  We are looking for people who are across all of these different Business Analysis tasks for our team.  Similarly to the Project Managers, we also want you to have a grounding in technology projects like the ones we deliver.

Software Engineers

You will potentially be working in a range of different technologies, primarily in the open source area.  You will have experience on one or more of the languages we use (e.g. Java, Python, PHP, Ruby) and one or more of the range of frameworks and technologies (e.g. Angular, Drupal, Symfony, Composer).  You will also have experience in cloud based infrastructure.  In short, if you have experience in these areas, and are confident with Git workflows, you are what we are looking for in our future Software Engineers.

The “where” of these positions is very flexible.  Gaia Resources has offices in Perth, Brisbane, Darwin and Hobart – and soon we will be expanding to include staff in Canberra and Melbourne. So we are looking for people who can join our existing offices, or our upcoming ones, as well as other areas in Australia.  We also pride ourselves on providing a flexible, supportive environment to our staff that is family-friendly – so working remotely or from home is also a part of our day-to-day operations.

So, most importantly – how do you get more information and apply?

If you are interested in working with us, and have the skills for the roles outlined above, then send a curriculum vitae and a covering letter explaining how you think that you would fit into these roles via the jobs@gaiaresources.com.au email address.  If you want to know more details about any of these roles, then drop a line to us via that email address, or call our Perth office on (08) 9227 7309.

We mainly recruit using word of mouth, or from the same, reliable recruiter who has been working with us for over 10 years.  So we’re asking for potential candidates who are interested in working with us, and meet the requirements outlined above, to get in touch with us now, rather than wait for future job ads.  While we will be putting out specific job adverts in time, you can ask now for the details of these positions – salary ranges, hours, and the like, by dropping us an email.

While we do use specific job ads (primarily via Seek and LinkedIn), it’s our connections that we have made to people out there that have been key to finding the right people.  So you could say that our process is to be opportunistic all year around, and many of the team that have joined us over the years are those who have been sent to us out of the blue outside of a recruiting round.  We’re hoping that this spurs a few more of our connections to dust off a CV and get in touch with us soon – don’t wait for the job ads to apply as we will create a new position for the right candidate(s)!

It’s going to be a very exciting year ahead for us – we’d like to find the right people to come and join us to make it a very successful one!

Editor’s note: Tania Ryan, the new Support Coordinator in our Brisbane office, volunteered to give us an insight into the challenges of starting a new job while confined to home. She writes:

There is always excitement, tinged with trepidation, as you start your new job on the first day; starting a new job during a global pandemic further adds to the mix of emotions.

Tania Ryan - Support Coordinator in our Brisbane office

Day One was not your normal first day on the job. For starters, I didn’t leave the house; I had the best car park; I also knew which of the two coffee shops down the road provided the best coffee; where the amenities were and how to escape the building if there was a fire alarm.

What I didn’t know was the culture of the company, how everyone interacted, what was expected of me and who was who in the business.

Gaia Resources already had their Business Continuity Plan in place for a few weeks before I joined and the team had all chosen to transition to a ‘work from home’ solution to the COVID-19 shutdown.

The executive team had run surveys and feedback sessions to understand what would be helpful for everyone to work from home. The way Gaia managed the changing environment by engaging the team really resonated with me. There were morning video coffee chats set up; a simple emoji ‘whereabouts log’ created, and an end of week discussion and survey to check-in to ensure everyone was OK.

So, what are the main differences from starting a new job in an office compared to working from home? Well firstly, you don’t normally stand at the front of an office and meet everyone at once as you do in a video call; there is no way to listen and observe the intricate social interactions, which often create the working relationships; and it’s hard to know what is expected without asking those awkward questions.  Gaia Resources has made great efforts to accommodate these communications.

Team chat

The video chats and calls are created in a relaxed environment with humour and good nature, which helps the meetings flow. My first group team meeting, where my screen was filled with new faces, did not feel as overwhelming as I had expected. Everyone took the time to say hi, introduce themselves and explain a little more of their background.

I was teamed up with a mentor and a team buddy, and having them both to hand gave me a sense of direction and understanding, helping me ease into my new role. My mentor, who is in fact the company’s CEO Piers Higgs, provided the guidance and encouragement for me to excel and grow quickly within the team. There were lots of opportunities for me to clarify meeting outcomes and provide post-meeting feedback, which ensured I didn’t feel isolated. In fact, the new working day interspersed with video calls and chats is actually starting to feel like a normal workday!

Another big factor to working from home when starting a new job is ensuring you are staying healthy by exercising and having family time. It is a little too easy to work and not know what is acceptable for the start and end of the day. Having the ‘whereabouts log’ was reassuring in that everyone is aware of their wellbeing and that there still needs to be a division between work and home life.

I have been impressed with how Gaia Resources has transitioned their company (which has staff in Perth, Brisbane and Darwin) into a productive work-from-home solution so successfully. With such support and direction, I plan to be working with them for many years to come.

Tania

Thank you, and welcome Tania! If you would like to know about Gaia Resources response to the COVID-19 shutdown, please contact us directly via email, or drop us a note on our social media channels: Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn.

We’ve been doing a round of recruiting lately, and the first announcement is that we have Gill White on board as our new Technical Project Manager.  As you can see, she’s already making herself at home!

Gill is already diving into our project management system and setting up projects

With Chris heading up to Darwin, we needed another local Perth based project manager to help us deliver our projects here, and after a pretty long round of interviews and discussions with candidates, Gill rose to the top of the list with her background in environmental science, spatial analysis and project management.  In her own words, Gill has had an interesting career both here and in the UK:

As a Geography graduate I spent several years working as a GIS officer in local governments in the UK, analysing population growth, socio economic indicators and urban development.

I interspersed these roles with several backpacking adventures and, bitten by the travel bug, I applied for residency in Australia.  When I arrived in Perth I worked in spatial analysis roles in the Department of Indigenous Affairs and the Environmental Protection Authority.

I then studied for a Post Grad Diploma in Environmental Management and landed a job as an Environmental Officer with the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation. I’ve been very fortunate to spend the past 11 years immersed in the rivers of WA, assessing their ecological condition to underpin management of waterways and water resources. I wore many hats in my role including spatial analyst, environmental/senior scientist, project manager and program manager. I also worked with NRM groups on a variety of waterway and catchment management projects across the state.

I am really excited to be part of the team at Gaia Resources and to contribute my environmental, spatial and project management experience to create technology solutions that support the amazing work done by the environmental sector in Australia.

Outside of work I enjoy yoga, kayaking, snorkelling and fossicking on the beach for shells. My favourite holidays combine all these hobbies while camping on remote beaches in WA.

Gill doing fieldwork in the Donnelly River

A lot of the people we already work with will know Gill from her previous role with the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, and she’s looking forward to catching up with a lot of people through her upcoming projects which include work in the Natural Resource Management and Citizen Science areas.  To get in touch with Gill, drop us a line on FacebookTwitter or LinkedIn, call our Perth office on (08) 92277309 or email Gill directly.

We’ll welcome a few more staff members in the coming month or two – stay tuned!

The new year has been and gone and here we are back again!

The first thing we wanted to was to lift the lid on our Perth Christmas party, where we decided to do something positive, as well as let our (metaphorical, at least for some) hair down.

Our day started with a quick jaunt (via public transport) to the Grant Marine Park in Cottesloe, where we met up with the Cottesloe Coastcare Association to help them to do some maintenance on the Park area. So we spent the first two and a bit hours of our Christmas party watering, weeding and cleaning up the rubbish in this little pocket of bush right on the coast. It was a great way to give back to the groups that have been supporting us; we support their use of GRID through the Perth Region NRM team, and we’ve trained these groups in GRID, QGIS and other technologies. If you’re looking for something different, contact your local group, via the Perth NRM group at this link – https://www.perthnrm.com/support/corporatevolunteering – and keep an eye out for some photos of our day next week when we’re all back on deck.

Our Perth team, along with a few Coastcare volunteers, made a significant difference in a couple of hours

After that, we had a good hour break where the team either went to straight to the Ocean Beach Hotel or down to the beach for a quick cool off and swim before we all sat down to lunch at the cBlu restaurant. Our Brisbane team – currently a little smaller than the Perth team – hit up the Newstead Brewing Company for a lunch for their part as well (and Steph in Hobart wasn’t left out, with a Christmas hamper). This multi-office approach we have now is really starting to get us to think about the nationwide Gaia team, and how we can really support and look after each other.

Part of that is about getting the right people on board, and this blog comes with a few announcements – the first is that we now have former GeoImage founder, Sylvia Michael, on board to head up our Brisbane team as the new Manager. Syl sums up our long collaboration pretty well in her “starting” quote:

“I am very much looking forward to working with Gaia Resources and contributing to their future growth and success. Over many years, I have enjoyed a respectful and professional association with their management and staff, and I fully support Gaia’s commitment and responsibility to deliver sustainable technology solutions.”

Our Brisbane team has been working well with a lot of remote support from the Perth team, but now that we’ve got a growing team there, we all figured it was time for some more support and hence Syl has come on board.  It also means that Andrew and I will be flying back and forth across the country less frequently now!

Along with Syl, Megan Edward joined the Brisbane team late in 2018, and has been getting up to speed with some very large projects in the Brisbane office, with some experience in the project management.  Megan has been on board for around a month now, and with her background in the environmental space, she really fits into our team well – although right at the moment the focus for the Brisbane office is on our Collections projects, we hope to shortly bring in a few more core environmental projects for Megan to manage.

Sylvia and Megan joining our first team meeting for the year (bonus Andrew)

Speaking of new team members, we also have additional team announcement for Perth – we have now got two additional software engineers on board – Arjun Kannan and Drew Robinson. Arjun and Drew join us for a large new project working with Drupal, and have started in the last few weeks in the hectic lead up to Christmas. Arjun has a wealth of PHP experience, while Drew is a Drupal “gun”, and both join us for a large project we are working on in the Drupal tech stack – an area we have experience in already. Both of the lads have settled in very quickly (Arjun has been with us for around 2 months now, Drew about two weeks!).  We’ve also got a few short term contract staff on board for that same project, who are performing various different roles – our Perth space is heaving now (thank goodness we moved into a larger dedicated area!)

Arjun and Drew in our new larger office space in Perth

And while we’re announcing changes, Chris is also off on a new adventure – he’s off to a new adventure in Darwin, although he’s not leaving our team. Chris’ family is moving up there for a new opportunity for his family – and so we’ve now officially got another state covered, meaning we’re now present in WA, QLD, TAS and now the NT. Chris will continue to manage a range of projects that he has been managing across the country, just from a different location and timezone.

So there’s a bunch of changes for our team, which is all setting up 2019 to be a great year with a great start… and a lot to get on and do!  We’re looking forward to all the new projects, partnerships and opportunities to make the world a better place that the new year offers.  So don’t hesitate to drop us a line, or call us, at either of our main offices;

perthoffice@gaiaresources.com.au

(08) 92277309

brisbaneoffice@gaiaresources.com.au

(07) 3063 0418

So, with all those changes and announcements it’s time to get stuck in!  From all our team we hope you had a great break and we look forward to catching up with you all again in 2019.  Of course, you can always start a conversation with us via social media (FacebookTwitter or LinkedIn) or you can call us on the numbers, or emails, above.

Happy new year!

It’s been a very busy six months for us here at Gaia Resources, with three new team members joining us since the start of the year – Voon Li Chung, Jake Treacher and Barbara Zakrzewska.  It’s about time we did some introductions – and it’s definitely time that we updated our About Us page with a bunch of new photos, so look out for that soon – but meanwhile, here’s a picture of the latest three new members of the Gaia Resources family:

Introducing Jake, Barbara and Voon Li (spot the actor?)

Voon Li joined us last year (time flies!) as a contract mobile software engineer, and quickly came up to speed with our various mobile tools.  He’s been working on our Project Hydra based citizen science platform, and a range of bespoke apps like Marine Parks, Wildcare Helpline and Camping Mate.  Voon Li has quickly broadened his skillset with us to take on more than just the mobile side of these projects, too, and has been working on the server side aspects of these platforms – which has been really helpful in the times when we get really busy!  In his spare time, he’s also a roller derby referee!

Barbara has been with us since early this year as a contractor, with a focus on a few larger projects that we’ve had on the go (which we’ll be blogging about at a later stage when they’re complete!).  Barbara’s background in geology really has been helpful in this work, which has a focus on the resources industry.  Barbara has been a great addition to our spatial team, and has been working with us on implementing a range of automation style technologies for our clients, to bring more efficiency into their systems and processes.

Jake (last but not least) is our newest software engineer who has joined us recently after completing an internship with the team at Hatchet, who also are FLUX residents.  Jake has taken on our first dedicated support engineer role, and works closely with Tracey to deliver a range of solutions and support to our clients using our systems like GRID as well as our citizen science projects.  He’s already proven himself to be willing and adaptable with the various technologies that we’ve flung at him, which is one of the main qualities we look for in staff these days.  Oh, and since we already have a Jake (Geddes), we’ve had to start calling them New Jake and Old Jake…

It’s great to see the team here expanding with our new team members, who all bring new ideas, technology skills and opinions to our little group (which is getting not so little?).  With the shot in the arm that we got from moving to the new space at FLUX through to a range of things that we’ve changed up this year, we’re seeing a lot of benefits to our organisation.  Although I for one am not using the gym at work often enough!

Even though we’ve been recruiting lately, we’re still looking for good people to join our team.  We’re working on some big new projects for the coming financial year, and we’ll be looking for new staff based in both our Perth and Queensland offices, with a focus on the project management and support areas.  If you’re interested in these areas, drop an email with your CV to jobs@gaiaresources.com.au and we’ll be in touch.

Based on the wide range of work that we have underway (and planned for the new year) we are looking for a junior software engineer.

If you have some experience after graduation (yes, you need a tertiary software engineering qualification), an interest in learning, and you want to make a difference, then apply.  You will be involved in a wide range of projects and technologies – including mobile development, web development, systems integration and infrastructure components, so it will give you a wide range of experience in these areas and will help you start to shape your career.

The position will be based in our Perth office, and if you want to know more, then call either myself or Andrew on (08) 9227 7309.

To apply, send us a CV and a covering letter to jobs@gaiaresources.com.au.  We would like to bring on the successful applicant in January, so get your application in by the 16th December, 2016.  As always, feel free to leave us a comment below, or have a conversation with us on FacebookTwitter or LinkedIn.

We’re in the middle of a very busy time for Gaia Resources, and we’re looking to hire a number of new people to help us with the volume of work and to contribute to the future of the company.

We’d like people who match our business and team ethos; namely that we’re looking to make a (positive!) difference to the environment and you’re willing to learn and extend yourself to deliver quality solutions for our clients.  We offer professional development and other programs to assist you in this aspect – with that said, we are looking for people who are formally qualified in the software engineering or related field.

So who are we looking for?  People with experience in one or more of these technologies:

  • Mobile development (both Android and iOS),
  • Django, and
  • PHP.

We’re prepared to take on multiple people, so if you have one of the areas under your belt, then please apply!  If you have any experience in our main client areas – the environmental field(s), or the collections field (e.g. herbaria, museums and archives) as well as one or more of the skills above that would be greatly advantageous to your application.

We’re looking to take people on for these roles in a full-time capacity, likely starting with a contract that runs for 6-12 months with the possibility of transitioning to a permanent position.  Salary ranges are going to be in the region of $80k-$100k, depending on your experience.

We’d like to hear from you in the next few weeks – send a response in to us as soon as possible, and definitely before Monday, the 4th of April, 2016.

Get your resume polished off, write a covering letter outlining how you fit into the mix above, and send it to us at jobs@gaiaresources.com.au – or give me a call in the office on (08) 9227 7309 to discuss any aspect of the positions we outline above.
